ABOUT: Kim Johnson

Kim A. Johnson has practiced law in Nova Scotia since 1998, after graduating with a B.A. from Bishops University, followed by an LLB from Dalhousie Law School. Starting out with a general practice, Ms. Johnson has practiced exclusively family law and wills and estates work for the past five years. Ms. Johnson regularly appears in court at both trial and appeal levels

Despite her extensive trial experience, Ms. Johnson prefers to resolve matters by consensus and collaboration wherever possible, and she has specialized training in mediation, negotiation and collaborative law. She is on the roster of mediators approved by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, and she is a member of both Family Mediation Nova Scotia and the Association of Collaborative Family Law Lawyers of Nova Scotia. She is also a past board member of the national organization Family Mediation Canada. She also teaches mediation to new lawyers at the Bar Admission Course for the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society. She has acted as a mediation coach for the Small Claims Court Mediation Internship Program and at various mediation training programs through Saint Mary's University. She regularly works in association with Annette Strug and AMS Mediation Associates.

Ms. Johnson is equally committed to the community, and she has been involved in extensive volunteer work throughout her career. Currently, she offers pro bono legal services to the clients of ReachAbility, she is a volunteer facilitator with the Parent Information Program offered by the Supreme Court (Family Division), and she sits on the Investigations Committee for the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists. She is committed to increasing public knowledge of legal information, and has presented free seminars for various public and private organizations throughout her professional career. In the past, she has been a member of the Emergency Services Planning Council for the Capital District Health Authority, and the chair of both the Southeastern Community Health Board and the Lifetime Advocacy Network Nova Scotia.

Ms. Johnson is married to Randy Spaulding, and they live in Hammonds Plains with their three children: Kate, Will and Zachary.
