ABOUT: Brian Casey
Brian was admitted to the Bar in 1982.
Brian routinely conducts trials and appeals in criminal, disciplinary and civil matters. He has been successful counsel in the Supreme Court of Canada and in the Courts of Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island, as well as before the Federal Court, and a variety of administrative boards. His court appearance have resulted in more than 100 reported decisions.
Brian has appeared as counsel for the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society; Canada Trust; the Bank of Nova Scotia; the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association; Dr. Henry Morgentaler; Paul Watson; the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador; Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro; the Christian Brothers of Canada; the Workers; Compensation Appeal Tribunal; the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission; the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses' Untion; the IFAW; and as Consumer Advocate before the Public Utilities Board. He has been a special prosecutor for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Brian has acted as counsel for parents seeking to keep their school open, in defamation proceedings, and in complicated civil proceedings. He has defended doctors, lawyers, nurses and other professionals from complaints of misconduct before their disciplinary bodies.
Brian is a past president, director and officer of the Canadian Student Debating Federation. He is past Chair of HomeBridge Youth Society. He has also served on the boards of a number of theatre companies, and different provincial debating societies. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, St. Patrick's Church and the Nova Scotia Criminal Lawyers' Association
Brian continues to be active coaching high school debating at Sacred Hearth School of Halifax, where his wife Patricia Donnelly is Headmistress.
Brian teaches the trial advocacy program at Dalhousie Law School and Criminal procedure in the Newfoundland Bar Admission Course. In the past, he has taught Contract law at the law school at the University of Sherbrooke, and lectured on Medical Legal Ethics at Memorial University Medical school and on Law and Education in the Education Faculty of Memorial University. Brian has served as chair of the criminal section of the Canadian Bar Association in Newfoundland and Labrador and been a speaker for the national association of media lawyers and in continuing legal education programs in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
